Focus on Today

Often times in life and in our business careers, we become so focused on our dreams and where we hope to be, that we forget the importance of today. Today is where our future begins. In order to accomplish and fulfill the dreams we hope for in the future, we must focus on today. Have you ever stopped to ask yourself, “What can I do today to move me one step closer to my dream?” Dreams are accomplished one step at a time and often one day at a time.

If you are anything like me, my dreams often overwhelm me. When I think of things I hope to accomplish with my business years from now, they are pretty grandiose desires. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and think that I can never accomplish that dream. I can find excuses like it’s too big, too hard, too expensive and quickly talk myself out of that dream. If however, I take time to break my dream down into smaller goals, then my dream becomes more attainable and a real possibility.

How do you break down a dream and focus on steps to do today? Here are a few basic ideas:

  1. Create a list of tasks that must be done in order to accomplish your dream. In order to accomplish a dream, you must understand what it’s going to take to get there. If you want to take a trip, write down everything you need in order to make that trip happen. Costs, travel options, time frames, travel documentation, climate, etc. Research and do the work of what it would take to make the trip.

  2. Create deadlines for your tasks. Set a date in which you desire to have your dream accomplished by. If you desire to write a book, and you keep saying to yourself, one day I will write a book, you will never make it a priority and get it done. If however, you say I am going to write a book and have it ready to send to a publisher by the end of 2016, you’ve made a commitment to move forward with that dream and you’ve created a boundary of time in which you are going to do it.

  3. Work on at least one task every week. We all feel overwhelmed with our time commitments and responsibilities. IF however, we commit to doing at LEAST one thing toward our long-term dream at least once a week, we are making progress. At the end of a year, you are 52 steps closer to accomplishing your dream.

  4. Begin saving NOW. Most dreams take finances to achieve them. Create a budget and work backwards. How much will a trip to Paris cost you? When are you going? Take the total cost and divide it by the amount of months until you travel and you will know exactly how much you will need to save each month before you go. By having a set goal in mind for every month, you may choose to forego that Starbucks coffee and make it at home so you can put that $10/week in the bank towards your trip.

  5. Tell others about your dream. When you share your dreams with others, it makes your dream come alive. Not only is that other person going to be excited with you about it, and create energy and excitement for it, but they can ask you how you are doing and encourage you when you get discouraged along the way. Talking about your dreams cause you to also tweak them and refine them as you share them with others.

By focusing on today, you make decisions that help propel you to where you want to be tomorrow. When we don’t focus on today, we fall into mundane routines and often go about our day unfocused and unmotivated. Today’s decisions affect tomorrow’s outcome.

What one thing can you do today to move you one step closer to fulfilling a lifelong dream?
