Gratitude for Freedom and More

As we head toward the Thanksgiving holiday and in light of the terrorist attacks in Paris recently, I thought we’d take a moment to focus on being grateful. So often we are busy and distracted and forget to take time to be thankful for the things we have in life.

Sometimes as Americans, we take our freedom and blessings for granted, as many others around the globe live in a very different world than we do. We need to remember above everything else that our freedom comes at a cost. So many men and women have served our nation and are currently serving to keep us safe and free. They lay down their lives to protect our country and the things we hold most dear. One thing we can do to honor their sacrifice is to be grateful for their service and not take our freedoms for granted.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving next week, may we remember to be grateful for this and the many other blessings we have in this great nation. Even basic necessities and provision shouldn’t be taken for granted. Here are a few things we can be grateful for daily:

  1. Our Homes. Not everyone on this planet has a warm & cozy house to come home to. Even if you are not living in abundance and wealth, so many others in nations across the world live in poverty and cannot even afford to have a roof over their head. May you embrace where you are, and dream for where you hope to be, but always be grateful that you have a roof over your head to protect you and keep you safe. Even a warm and cozy bed which seems natural to us isn’t guaranteed in many other countries. May we not live arrogantly, but grateful for the provisions we have.

  2. Food. In this country we not only have food, we have it in abundance. The choices we have in our cereal aisles alone are mind boggling. We are privileged to have grocery stores on every corner, restaurants galore and the choice to eat what we like and refuse what we don’t. We throw away left overs and often don’t even think about those who literally go to bed hungry and without. May we stop and think, not taking things for granted.

  3. Jobs. So often we enter our workplace with a critical heart. We moan about what we don’t like and criticize our bosses or those we work with. But how often do we think about those struggling to even land a job? Those who cannot find employment or keep losing their jobs because of illness or bad breaks? May we learn to embrace the ability we have to work, making a salary and providing for those we love. May we not take our employers for granted, but be grateful for employment opportunities and for the ability to get up and go to work every day.

  4. Family & Friends. How often do we take our family and friends for granted? We assume they will always be around and forget to communicate our appreciation and love for those we do life with. We disregard that life is always changing and we do not know what tomorrow holds for any of us. Make sure to communicate often your love and gratitude towards those who are closest to you. Allow them to know they are valued and needed by you.

Take the next week or two to reflect and be grateful for the blessings you have in your life. Enter into your work with a sense of purpose and joy, again being thankful for all you are able to accomplish in life. Communicate to those you work, live and relate with how much you appreciate and love being with them. Find practical ways to say thanks to those serving our nation to preserve our freedom and make time to genuinely be grateful to those who make the benefits of your life possible. Gratitude goes a long way and creates a positive environment for you to work and exist in.
